Walking in Mayo
Saint Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, made County Mayo his home for many years around 400AD. Spending 40 days and nights on the imposing Croagh Patrick, he banished snakes, dragons and demonic forces from his vantage point. The surrounding county is littered with heritage sites, stemming from the time he stayed here.
IRD Kiltimagh have produced a guide to the town of Kiltimagh which also includes information on walking routes within the area. This brochure is available to download from the home page of the website or from local tourism information offices.
The Foxford Way is 86km long, with the Ox Mountains on one side and the distinctive Nephin Mountain on the other; it is one of Mayo's finest walks. It extends south through the Ox Mountains, from Foxford to Straide and around Lough Cullin to Pontoon. It is an innovative walk with a rich variety of flora and fauna and an exceptional archaeological and historical content.
During your walk, you will encounter bogs, mountains, rivers and Lakes and breathtaking scenery to delight the walker. Although not obvious to the landscape, the influence of man is chronicled through the many fascinating pre-historic and early Christian sites throughout your walk. Recommended Guidebook: The Foxford Way, Bealach Béal Easa, published by Mayo County Council.
The Clogher Bog Loop Walk is located mid-south of the county, and is one of five marked walking trails around the pretty village of Clogher. Following a network of minor lanes, tracks and paths past sites of both natural and historic importance. Telephone +353 (0)94 9360891 for information.
